Man United too strong for Inter
Manchester United 2 – 0 Inter Milan (2-0 aggregate)
There was no upset to the sports betting odds on Wednesday night as United booked their place in the quarter-finals with a hard fought victory over Jose Moruinho’s Inter Milan.
Before the game there had been fears Jose Mourinho would again be seen running down the Old Trafford touchline as he did as Porto manager but after just four minutes those fears began to ease. A Ronaldo break down the right-hand side won United a corner in the opening stages, Ryan Giggs stepped up to take and Nemanja Vidic headed home unmarked with an unstoppable header past Julio Cesar. Vidic’s goal was an absolute gift from Inter as Patrick Viera drifted off his man and allowed Vidic to score unchallenged, in defending no one associates with the Italian game.
It wasn’t all plain sailing for United though. After that brilliant start both Giggs and Scholes were guilty of some sloppy play that nearly allowed the Nerazzuri back in. United gave away a very avoidable free-kick about ten minutes before the end of the half. Maicon whipped a cross in and Zlatan Ibrahimovic headed goal-wards, only too see his effort come back of the bar with Van der Sar well beaten.
United could have gone out of sight just after the Ibrahimovic attempt. Wayne Rooney found John O’Shea through on goal with his first time pass but the Irishman saw his effort saved by Cesar in the Inter goal. It was a chance that would have been a safe online bet to go in had Dimitar Berbatov or Rooney been on the end of it but unfortunately O’Shea’s finishing let him down. The home side were nearly made to pay instantly, with Mario Balotelli mirroring Rooney and placing a first time pass to Ibrahimovic who saw his drilled shot sail just inches past the post.
After the break it was the Italians who started the brighter of the two sides. However, it was United who doubled their advantage on the 49th minute. A sublime run from Giggs on the right drew the Inter defence too him and he played a neat ball to Scholes, Scholes found Rooney and his pin-point cross was headed home by Ronaldo.
Inter continued to press and substitute Adriano saw an effort come back off the post but United held on for a well-deserved victory and booked their place in the last eight of the competition.
