United win in 8-goal thriller

Man Utd 5-3 Gamba Osaka

The introduction of Wayne Rooney saw six goals in seventeen minutes as Manchester United progressed to the final of the Club World Cup to play Liga de Quito in an enthralling finale to the game.

The game started in exhibition pace as Osaka had much of the possession in front of United’s box but didn’t have the penetration to get through the defence. Ronaldo dazzled the crowd with his quick footwork and there was a buzz of anticipation every time he got the ball. The Portuguese winger at the heart of United’s attacks in the first half.

First a mesmerising run saw Ronaldo shoot wide and another deflected wide. However a corner kick brought the first goal as Vidic (28) outjumped his marker and headed home.

Ronaldo created another chance for Anderson but his contact was too weak but the Portuguese winger then got his own. Another corner from Giggs and Ronaldo (45+1) accurately headed home into the bottom corner.

The second half was laboured until the intriduction of Wayne Rooney. The England forward man recieved a crescendo of applause however Osaka capitalised on United’s lack of concentration and Yamazaki (74) neatly finished from the edge of the box.

Rooney (75) made an instant reply, miscontrolling a Fletcher chipped pass and placing home with his left. Flecther (78) himself made it four with a header from Nani’s cross and Rooney (79) again scored a minute later poking passed Fujigaya.

Osaka determined not to be overwhelmed by the scoreline then decided to take it up a notch as Endo’s long range strike was palmed in front of the goal by Van Der Sar and Neville came in with a brilliant sliding tackle to deny an open goal. Rooney was booked for overreacting to a scramble for the ball soon after.

The Japanese side got a fortunate penalty however as the ball struck Gary Neville’s arm and Endo (85) nonchelantly placed home with an accurate penalty. Hashimoto (90+1) put a thrilling end to the game by lashing passed Van Der Sar at the near post.
