Alex Ferguson appointed Manchester United manager

Alex Ferguson has been appointed as the new manager of Manchester United.

The Scot is a proven winner, having enjoyed domestic and European success with Aberdeen but he takes the helm at United at a time of supposed decline. It is, given the club’s ever-lasting prestige, and despite the recent shortcomings, a brave decision by the Old Trafford suits to hire Ferguson. He takes over from the sacked Ron Atkinson, who saw league glory slip away last season.

Ferguson is an outspoken figure – as if that needed saying. The nickname ‘Furious Fergie’, given to him by his own players back when he was coaching at Pittodrie, tells us all we need to know and more. He might be a strict disciplinarian but United want and need more than that …

Time will tell just how effective this new coach will be – trophies will be an accurate measure for a team with such an illustrious history. It’s going to be tough, Fergie…
