How’s life now for the one and only Juan Sebastián Verón

A few days ago, we wrote an article about former United player Kleberson, and what life is like now for the Brazilian. After the success in that article, we thought we’d bring you another one. This time, another player who failed to impress at Old Trafford, the one and only Juan Sebastián Verón.

Here is the player that was seen as the worst signing of all of the Premiership’s history, (or at least the Times newspaper thought so) and could not live up to his expensive price tag £28.1m. At the time, the money spent of the Argentinian was the most ever in English football. Performances from Verón were not good enough, and he ever rarely impressed the Manchester United faithful.

Now plying his trade at his boyhood club Estudiantes, in Argentina, Verón has seen change for the better. Maybe the football is a shade different to what he has experienced here in England, but Verón has been successful with the club helping them succeed in league games and competitions.

Verón helped Estudiantes gain a respectable 7th position in the Primera Division, which features the likes of Boca Juniors and River Plate, and helping them reach the final of the Copa Libertadores, which is similiar to the FA Cup.

But it’s also about the individual sucess. Named as the best player in the Argentine league in 2008 by many fellow players, but his real big acheivement has to be the when he was elected South American Footballer of the Year.  For the club, he has made 30 appearances and has found the net 10 times.

The Copa Libertadores is not like the FA Cup but the South American version of the Champions League – very prestigious

I personally do not think veron was a flop , i watched him play nearly every game for united and i thought he played well in most of them.
His passing in some games was sublime the man oozed class , but as per usual in this country we only like players who run around like headless chickens.
He was also unfortunate that united went through a transitional stage during his stay and also fergie experimented with the lone striker , which did not help.
All in all i was gutted when he left and indeed on the preseason tour that season he was outstanding

PJ Couldnt agree more. Im a season ticket holer at OT and think you hit the nail on the head! Ocassionally the faster games caught him wanting but the cause was usally him not playing in the centre. Glad he’s showing his talent for all to see! I still mull over that pirouette at OT when he sent a ball racing off down the wing! Superb player!

I agree that Veron did better than most people seem to think. I liked him a lot. Thanks for the update!

A good mostalgic article, spoiled by the presumptious claim of Veron being the biggest flop of the premiership to date. You,and the times must be joking.Veron was real class, but his greatest adversary was the great Roy Keane.Veron operated from the middle, but that was Keano’s domain, and SAF had to deploy Veron elswhere, like on the wing.Even so,he played many good games for United and he was certainly not a flop.As someone else remarked, sometimes genuine ball players are not appreciated in England.

  8. Hakan says :

Yes, Keane’s influence was probably an important reason why Veron didn’t play to his full potential at United. I think Keane has even, kind of, admitted this.
